The program is an innovative and unique residential program serving chronic substance abuse in women 18yrs and older. It is a family atmosphere of women working in a program of recovery while developing a network of sober support. Regardless of when a resident moves out, Nicki’s Place will always be home. Our family way of life will provide a safe and clean environment that is ideal for continuing long-term recovery. MASH works as Minnesota’s affiliate of the National Alliance of Recovery Residences, or NARR, which provides specific standards of its members. Curtiss estimated about 60% of the state’s sober homes are certified under MASH.
While the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services in Massachusetts is responsible for certifying all addiction treatment programs in the state, it does not certify sober living homes. It can be very difficult to find mash certified sober homes funding for sober living home projects in any state, and Massachusetts is no different. Additionally, we operate the Anthony House on a code of ethics created by MASH that all homeowners and staff agree to.

It provides overarching leadership and management to NUWAY®, the NUWAY Recovery Foundation, Cochran Recovery Services, and The Gables. Additionally, the NUWAY Alliance is available to partner with aligned organizations needing leadership and management to support recovery access. The ATR team understands that the discontinuation of ATR’s Sober Home Service may bring questions and concerns. Many ATR participants still express a need for housing support, so ATR Coordinators will continue to assess housing needs and will refer participants to the Rapid Rehousing Program when appropriate. A History of the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities affected by alcohol and drug dependency by providing affordable, effective educational services grounded in the Twelve Step principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. Despite mandatory drug testing and curfews, there have been overdose deaths at sober houses in Massachusetts over the years. The beautiful backyard here on a 1.6 acre lot is not only a beautfully updated home but is also the home to a small farm where the women have the opportunity to care for the animals as well as grow a variety of vegetable in the garden. The women here support one another by holding each other accountable, asking for help when needed, and celebrating each other’s successes.
“If state funds are to be used in sober home settings, the state has the obligation to assure that the settings meet state-defined standards,” the DHS said in the statement. “So now this bill shows up without the group really having the chance to look over the study and say, ‘Does the DHS’ presentation of the study results represent what those of us in the study group felt as well? Each guest can expect a clean bed, sufficient clothing storage, HDTV w/ cable and free wifi in every room inside a clean, well maintained home cared for by the guests who stay there! Our homes are smoke free but there are plenty of designated outdoor smoking areas.
House of Conversion
MASH advocates for the state to instead support their existing certification process instead of trying to start over. In 2007, eight sober house operators established the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing. Legislation in 2014 created voluntary certification of Massachusetts sober houses, and MASH began managing voluntary statewide sober home certification in 2016. If the ATR participant decides that a sober home is the best housing environment for them, they will work with a RRH case manager to find a suitable sober home and are eligible to receive assistance with move in costs and rent. RRH will only pay for sober homes that are MASH Certified and within the RRH designated service areas, which are the same service areas as ATR (Boston, Lowell, Fall River/New Bedford, Worcester, Springfield/Holyoke). Sen. Keenan and MASH collaborated earlier this legislative session to appropriate funds for the installation of new fire supression systems in sober homes across the Commonwealth.

Becoming MASH-certified is voluntary, but there’s good reason to join. Back in Quincy, City Councilor Brian Palmucci has proposed an ordinance that would regulate how a sober house is established. The DHS disputed the interpretation that the bill requires that staff administer medications and said they communicated with MASH the opportunity to ask clarifying questions on April 10 but have not yet received a response.
In addition to certifying housing, the non-profit also provides training, housing member services, grievance management, scholarships and rental assistance to Massachusetts sober homes. FSSP grants (up to $80,000 per Sober Home) will provide the funding necessary to bring Sober Homes into compliance with MGL c. 26H, as this new fire safety code is adopted by local cities and towns in Massachusetts. The program provides clients with not only a counselor but access to a staff psychiatrist as well. SOBER HOME SERVICES
Curtiss said MASH does not oppose adding regulations to sober homes to create a better experience for residents. But MASH advocates for a pause on the bill so the DHS can work with sober homes to develop one that better reflects the goals of all who would be impacted. MASH was told they would be able to review the results by September of 2022, said John Curtiss, a MASH co-founder and board member and owner of The Retreat, a set of Twin Cities recovery centers and sober homes. Sober homes are not currently defined or regulated under state law. They are commonly understood as supportive communities for people recovering from substance use issues to live drug- and alcohol-free after completing inpatient rehab or while in outpatient programming. The NUWAY Alliance is a nonprofit organization created in October 2019 to provide leadership, innovation, and recovery access in response to national and local trends in behavioral healthcare.
